Antique Talk's Millenilutions

I'm not a big fan of once-a-year resolutions.  The most successful people I know resolve to make improvements in themselves and their world on weekly if not a daily basis.  That said, here are some antique-related goals for your consideration for not only this year but also this century.

1. This year, resolve to make the appreciation and study of antiques a bigger part of your life. This century, make that same commitment to American and world history.

2. This year, resolve to master the computer.  This century, do likewise with the Internet.

3. This year, resolve to always carry the following antique treasure-hunting tools in your car: a flash light, a small antique reference library, a tape rule, a check book, a camera, good maps, business or collecting cards, and a list of useful phone #'s. This century, resolve to carry those same articles in one of those new, easy to drive, vans.

4. This year, resolve to watch fewer mindless network television programs.  This century, resolve to watch more educational and entertaining cable programs like Public Television, A &E and the History Channel offer.

5. This year, resolve to take an antique related course.  This century, resolve to teach one.

6. This year, visit the Wadsworth Athenaeum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution.  This century visit the Louvre, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Goteborg Museum of Art in Sweden.

7. This year, profit by buying more at public auctions.  This century, profit by selling more at auctions.

8. This year, read Charles Dickens. This century, read James Joyce.

9. This year, reacquaint yourself with 18th and 19th century artisanship.  This century, reacquaint yourself with 20th century artisanship.

10. This year, exercise your body.  This century, exercise your mind.

11. This year find a friend who shares your appreciation of art, history and antiques.  This century, find the same in a lover.

12. This year, play the board game Monopoly.  This century purchase the board game Monopoly-preferably a 1934 first year edition.

13. This year, buy a charming old cupboard.  This century, buy a charming old house.

14. This year, collect art.  This century, become an artist.

15. This year, support a charitable organization.  This century, join one.

16. This year, regularly attend estate and tag sales.  This century, do the same at quality shops.

17. This year become expert in at least one area of antiques.  This century, learn that there are no experts, just students.

18. This year, collect an old brass fire extinguisher.  This century, collect an early leather paint-decorated fire bucket.

19. This year, learn more about classical music.  This century, attend operas and symphonies.

20. This year, laugh.  This century, love.
